What I don't need in a GPS are things like bluetooth data-sharing, 3G connectivity, touchscreen, digital camera, 3 dimensional terrain views, satellite imagery downloads, barometric altimeter, 3-axis compass, turn-by-turn road navigation, text-to-speech, etc, etc, etc! The Garmin ones can be off by about half an hour or so, but they are good enough for planning purposes. A nautical chart would tell me water depth and anchorage locations, but that stuff doesn't matter for kayaking. I use topographic maps rather than nautical charts for kayak navigation, the reason being that with a topo map, I can identify likely campsite locations and fresh water sources, as well as day hike opportunities.
